Increasing Equity in Safe Motherhood: A Targeted Approach
Experience shows that service strengthening with untargeted access interventions does not significantly increase service utilisation by poor and excluded groups, but tends to benefit the relatively privileged. The Equity and Access Programme was therefore designed to specifically target poor and excluded families using rights based social mobilisation approaches. This has resulted in dramatic increases in health care seeking and knowledge among these groups, reducing the equity gap.
