Conference in South Africa: Countdown to 2015
In May 2008, a team from Nepal, headed by the Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Population and including the Director of the Family Health Division of the Department of Health Services, participated in the “Maternal Newborn and Child Survival, Countdown to 2015” conference in Cape Town, South Africa, with representatives from 68 countries across the globe. The main focus of the conference was tracking progress towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals for maternal and child health to reduce maternal and child deaths. The Nepal team presented four papers:
1. Political processes and policy decisions that make a difference to maternal and child health care
2. Newborn health issues within the continuum of health care – saving young lives
3. Child health issues and accelerating coverage of child health interventions
4. Scaling up successful interventions.
Groups also worked on developing ideas for future action in reducing maternal and child death rates. The conference provided an excellent opportunity for different countries to share their successes and concerns in working for improved maternal and child health.
