NESOG Tenth National Conference
On 28th/ 29th March 2008 the tenth annual conference of the Nepal Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (NESOG) was held, with the theme of “Improving maternal and Neonatal Health in Low Resource Settings”. The objective of the conference was to discuss ways to improve maternal and neonatal health with limited resources. Around 300 people attended, including gynaecologists, nurses, and paramedics from all over Nepal and from other countries such Japan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and the USA. Dr Pramila Pradhan, President NESOG, chaired the Inaugural ceremony and the chief guest was Dr Bishnu Prasad Pandit, Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Population. At the conference Dr Indira Basnett, Nepal Country Representative for Ipas, was awarded honorary membership of NESOG and a certificate for outstanding contributions to the conference and to NESOG.
Key topics covered by presentations and summarised in the souvenir report printed for the occasion included: improving maternal care through training of skilled birth attendants, based on the new government policy and in-service training strategy; prevention of unsafe abortions and expansion of safe abortion services; cervical cancer control; utero-vaginal prolapse; and updates on recent NESOG activities, including public education and awareness raising. Safe abortion was a particular focus area, with a total of seven papers presented at two sessions, one of which was sponsored by Ipas and jointly chaired by senior gynaecologist, Dr Bhola Rizal, and Dr Indira Basnett.
