New report available: Maternal and Perinatal Death Review in Nepal

Facility based maternal and perinatal death review is a powerful tool for understanding the factors behind maternal and neonatal deaths and stillbirths. In Nepal, review processes were initiated in the main Maternity Hospital in Kathmandu in the early 1990s for maternal deaths and in 2005 for perinatal deaths. In 2007 a rapid study was undertaken consisting of key informant interviews and a review of hospital records of the 72 maternal deaths that had occurred in the last ten years and the 1,193 perinatal deaths in the two years since initiation of the review process. Valuable information was revealed about the causes of death and factors related to institutional care that need to be addressed to avoid deaths in future. Recommendations were also made about ways to improve and scale up the review process.
