“'Aama' radio program has created discussion on safe motherhood and newborn health inside the home” (Morang focus group participant during a recent 'Aama' Radio Magazine Program Assessment)

In January, 2008, a qualitative assessment of the 'Aama' radio magazine program was conducted in the five broadcast districts to collect feedback for potential radio program continuation.  The localized 'Aama' radio program combines entertainment and education to encourage life saving behaviors related to maternal and newborn health.  The assessment revealed that audience members liked the program and th
ey found 'Aama' interesting, informative and useful. People shared that 'Aama has created discussion on safe motherhood and newborn health inside the home'.  They mentioned that they felt like the radio program was especially for them because the program used local words, songs and interviews of people like them.  They were interested in the health information and particularly touched by the dramas about relationships between husband and wife and between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Some people mentioned feeling less hesitant to seek health information after listening to ‘Aama’.  A few Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) stated that listening to the 'Aama program helped them feel more confident in their work - that they are doing right thing.  Participants resoundingly requested that the 'Aama' continue.  'Aama' is developed and broadcast by the Equity Access Program of Action Aid in 5 districts, Surkhet, Baglung, Morang, Chitawan and Rupandehi (in Awadi), with technical support from the National Health Education Information and Communication Center (NHEICC) and Johns Hopkins/Center for Communication Programs (JHU/CCP-SSMP).
