Report of Pro-Poor Health Policy Monitoring
Free health care is now available for everyone at all public sector primary health care centres, health and sub-health posts, and for targeted disadvantaged groups at district hospitals. In addition, through the recently launched Aama programme, free delivery care is available for all women at all public health facilities and certain approved non-government facilities, combined with incentives to meet at least some of the travel costs to the facilities. The effectiveness of these pro-poor policies was assessed through a household survey carried out in 2009 by Care-Nepal, with funding from RTI, under the DfID Health Sector Reform Support Programme, and technical inputs from SSMP/Options. Representatives from almost 6,000 households in 13 districts were interviewed to assess their knowledge about the availability of free care and their health seeking behaviours. In particular the differences between different ethnic and caste groups were analysed. The report of findings can be found on the website www.hsrp.org
