Building Capacity on Interpersonal Communication among Health Workers of Myagdi and Dadeldhura

"We can use each and every step of IPC skills in our professional life as well as in our family life" said Ms Parbati Pant, MCH Worker during the workshop held at District Health Office (DHO), Dadeldhura in Nepal’s Far-western Region.

Following the demand made by DHOs, Johns Hopkins/School of Public Health/Support to Safe Motherhood Program (JHU-SSMP) organized a three days workshop on Interpersonal Communication for community level health workers from 10-12 and 21-23 May, 2008 in Myagdi and Dadeldhura districts respectively.  National Health Education, Information and Communication Center (NHEICC) provided the Orientation curriculum. The main objective of the orientation was to enhance knowledge and skills of participants on interpersonal communication, clarify the importance of communication in behavior change, clarify the client's right and health service providers' responsibility and need in providing quality services and ultimately enable them to use the visual aids effectively in interpersonal communication.

In Myagdi and Dadeldhura, total of forty- nine (49) health workers – Auxiliary Health Workers ( AHWs),Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), Village Health Workers ( VHWs), Maternal and Child Health Workers (MCHWs) and Public Health Nurses (PHNs)- actively participated in these orientations.

After the workshop, DHO of Dadeldhura, Mr. Shree Krishna Bhatta, said "Interpersonal Communication Skill is key for the personality development".  Ms.Tara Budhathoki, MCH Worker of DHO Myagdi expressed "All communication themes provided me good input to enhance my work". Also, PHN Amrita Swarnakar of DHO Dadeldhura expressed that she learned very important skills from this orientation and would like to commit for its practice in her daily work. In the closing program, the DHOs of respective districts, Mr. Roshan Lal Chaudhary ( Myagdi) and Mr. Shree Krishna Bhatta ( Dadeldhura) expressed thanks to all participants, facilitators and implementing agencies for the workshop. The workshop was facilitated by BCC professionals from Nepal Center for Communication Program (NCCP), a local communication NGO.
