Evaluation of the Safe Delivery Incentive Programme: Final Report of the Evaluation May 2008

The Safe Delivery Incentive Programme (SDIP) was initiated by the Government of Nepal in 2005, to help women meet the high financial costs of childbirth. In particular it aimed to encourage women to deliver at a health facility or at least to use the services of a trained health worker if they delivered at home. It provides financial incentives to: (1) women delivering at a health facility, (2) health workers providing safe delivery services and (3) health facilities providing delivery services in 25 of the poorest districts. The programme has been evaluated by the Institute of Child Health, University College London, to assess the implementation process and the effects of the SDIP on women and their families, and provide recommendations for improvements. The work was carried out between January 2007 and April 2008 in two phases. Findings are drawn from a survey of 5,903 recently delivered women in six study districts. The full report is now available in the resources section of this website.
