Update on Skilled Birth Attendance Training Programme

Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) has completed preparations for becoming a training site for skilled birth attendants (SBA). An SBA programme orientation and skills update was provided for all nursing and medical staff working in the maternity unit and a 15-day SBA training given to MDGPs and ob/gyn specialists, who will now be able to provide training. This brings the number of functioning SBA training sites to eight (Maternity Hospital in Kathmandu, Koshi Zonal Hospital in Biratnagar, Bharatpur Hospital in Chitwan, Seti Zonal Hospital in Dhaghadi, Lumbini Zonal Hospital in Rupandehi, Baglung District Hospital and Amda (NGO) Hospital in Jhapa). Surkhet Regional Hospital and the Western Regional Hospital in Pokhara are likely to start training within the next two months.

A two-day trainers interactive meeting was organised in Nagarkot to help improve training quality and systems. Trainers attended from six of the training sites to share their experiences and best practices and present their progress reports. The National Health Training Centre presented letters of appreciation to trainers who had contributed in a major way to starting up new training sites and developing the SBA training courses. Key learning points and recommendations that emerged from discussions were:

·            In general, it is difficult to train staff nurses and ANMs in the same group because of the difference in levels of understanding, and it was recommended that ANMs be trained separately. Experienced staff nurses and medical officers can be trained together.
·            ANMs need reference manuals and materials in Nepali rather than English, and should have a simple to use combined pack, rather than separate references.
·            Trainers find the combination of training and service provision stressful, so it was recommended that four trainers should be allocated per training rather than three, to share the load.
