Update on Skilled Birth Attendant Training

In November the National Health Training Centre (NHTC), in collaboration with Support to the Safe Motherhood Programme (SSMP) and Nepal Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (NESOG), ran an eight-day clinical training skills (CTS) course for 20 experienced staff nurses and doctors from districts across the country, to expand the pool of clinical trainers available. This is part of ongoing efforts to increase the number of Skilled Birth Attendant (SBA) in-service training sites to support the rapid increase in SBAs needed to meet national needs. Currently three sites are running trainings (Maternity Hospital in Kathmandu, Koshi Zonal Hospital in Morang and Bharatpur Hospital in Chitwan, and a further three are expected to begin by January (Seti Zonal Hospital in Kailali, Baglung District Hospital and Lumbini Zonal Hospital in Rupandehi). To date 141 SBAs have been trained, a mix of doctors, staff nurses and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANM). For the future the focus is intended to be on training more ANMs, in order to expand SBA services into peripheral areas, where currently they are not available or are very limited.
